Earth Day Books for Little Learners
It’s Earth Day!! HOORAY!! I love being able to teach our little ones the importance of caring for our earth. Recycling, composting, and planting new trees make for a bunch of great stories and books! So, I pulled together my current favorite Earth Day books for toddlers and preschoolers, along with a few ideas for how to use each book to teach simple skills at home. Scroll to see which ones your little ones would love!
Also…SPOILER ALERT: I’ll give a quick synopsis of what each book is about. Just so I don’t spoil any part of the stories for you, you’ve been fairly warned. Haha! :)
These “Hello, World” books are my FAVORITE! I love how they have just enough information in them to teach our little ones about the nonfiction concepts included, but not too much information to be overwhelming. This one is all about our amazing Earth, with simple facts about countries, continents, oceans, landforms, habitats, and Earth's place in space.
The pictures are super bright and cheerful too! Every page includes helpful prompts for engaging with your child and bringing science and nature into their world. This book is just a great one to talk about and explore with your little learners.
This eco-friendly picture book includes a bunch of simple, smart ideas for how we can all contribute and work together to make the Earth feel good. Offering ideas about everything from planting trees and using both sides of a paper to saving energy and reusing old things in new ways.
It’s the perfect book for inspiring little ones to choose some simple things they can do to contribute to a healthier Earth! Use it to help your little one think about things they can do to help and draw pictures.
This ADORABLE book is all about a little girl names Trina. She plants trees with her class, creates an Earth Day club with some friends, and wonders, what can YOU do to make every day Earth Day too? This story is perfect for learning how to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
This nonfiction picture book is packed with kid-friendly text and bright illustrations, making it memorable and amazing for practicing retelling. It’s also another great book for inspiring little ones to make choices to keep the Earth healthy and happy!
4. Biscuit’s Earth Day Celebration
A little girl and Biscuit are the stars of this book and they talk about all the reasons why it’s important to “celebrate good ways to take care of our world, Biscuit!” The little yellow puppy helps the little girl take care of our green world by planting seeds, cleaning up, and lots of other ideas too.
This book is a simple and fun way to introduce Earth Day concepts to young learners. The sweet characters provide lots of opportunity to retell the story in the correct sequence and also inspire lots of ways to take care of the Earth. Totally love this sweet little Biscuit story!
5. Earth Day: An Alphabet Book
And, last but not least, you KNOW I had to include a letters-centered book, right? Haha! This precious book gives thanks for the Earth's TONS of diverse species, from apricots to groundhogs to june bugs! Each page shows a few things from the Earth that start with the corresponding letter of the alphabet that we can celebrate and be grateful for!
The illustrations are simple, bright, and even whimsical. They offer a great opportunity to practice new vocabulary words and name pictures on every page. It’s also a great way to practice letter identification and formation by simply incorporating some letter tracing as you read! The tracing activities in this learning binder would be perfect!
Hope you found a new book or two for your little ones to learn about Earth Day with. Wishing you lots of new beginnings and time in nature this spring, friend.
Cheering you on!
